Hiking in the San Juan Mountains
Whether you’re a novice hiker or an expert, there are several popular hiking areas in the San Juan Mountains. You can see wildflowers, wildlife and breathtaking scenery. Be sure to check weather conditions before heading out and pack accordingly. The San Juan Mountains Association is a good resource when preparing for a hiking trip. They include maps, trail conditions, tips and more.
A few of the premier hiking areas in the San Juan Mountains include Chicago Basin and Ice Lake Basin. The Chicago Basin is a popular spot located in the Weninuche Wilderness within the San Juan National Forest. It’s only accessible via the Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad. As the saying goes, “Getting there is half the journey,” and this ride on a historical steam locomotive won’t disappoint. Located in the San Juan National Forest, Ice Lake Basin is about 1.5 hours south of our RV Park. The trail is just over 8 miles long and rated difficult but being able to see the bright blue water is worth the trip.
Motorized Recreation in the San Juan Mountains
Prefer to ditch your hiking boots and get your adrenaline pumping? ATV adventures are popular in the area and Alpine Loop is a hot spot. It’s a 65-mile backcountry route that winds around the towns of Ouray, Silverton and Lake City. There are easy roads but also more challenging for experienced drivers. The roads rise above the timberline and provide spectacular views. Ouray is about 45 minutes from Montrose-San Juan RV Park and there are many ATV outfitters in the area. Even closer and just north of Montrose is the National Conservation Area which allows open off-route riding in the Flat Top and Peach Valley Areas.
Horseback Riding in the San Juan Mountains
Saddle up and take in mountain views on horseback. It’s a unique way to experience the trails when horses were the primary means of transportation. Nearby Ouray has horseback riding outfitters that offer trails from “wild to mild.”
