Hunting Near Montrose and the Gunnison National Forests
Southwestern Colorado provides many opportunities for hunting enthusiasts. Montrose County, which is located on Colorado’s western border with Utah, continues to be one of the top Colorado counties for producing trophy-quality bucks. Every level of sportsman will enjoy the countryside surrounding Montrose which offers opportunities for elk, deer, antelope, mountain lions, sheep, waterfowl, and rabbit. In fact, it was named to Outdoor Life magazine’s annual list of the 200 best towns in America for outdoorsmen.
Meanwhile, Grand Mesa Uncompahgre and Gunnison National Forests (GMUG) draw hunters from all over the country. According to the Forest Service, “The major big-game species that live in the GMUG National Forest are mule deer, elk, mountain goat, bighorn sheep, moose, black bear, and mountain lion. Game bird species that are hunted include turkey, blue grouse, sage grouse, rock and morning dove, and various waterfowl species.” The Uncompahgre Plateau is home to one of Colorado’s best Game Management Units for trophy elk, unit 61.

Planning Your Hunting Trip
Once you’ve secured a roof over your head, you’ll need hunting license. The Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) and local retailers sell licenses. You can find a list on the CPW website and there are several in the city of Montrose.
You also want to watch the weather as access to areas can close quickly. Be aware of fire, snow and other issues that cause hunting areas to close.
You can choose to hire a hunting outfitter which will take care of much of the planning and preparation for you. There are many outfitters in the area which are permitted by the U.S. Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management (BLM) to provide fully guided, semi-guided, and self-guided hunts, depending on your goals.
You can also chart your own adventure and use public resources such as the Colorado Hunting Atlas as a guide. The atlas allows users to view big game concentrations and game management units on top of street maps, USGS topographic maps or high-resolution color aerial photography.
